“Baviaanskloof”

The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is the third largest nature conservation area in South Africa and is also declared a World Heritage Site, consisting of some of the largest verity of fauna and flora rarely found in the world, making it a nature enthusiast’s paradise.

Road Conditions: The road (R332) through the Baviaanskloof is a narrow, steep, gravel surfaced, winding road, through breathtaking mountainous terrain. The distance between Komdomo (office) at the Eastern entrance, to Uniondale in the West, is approximately 224 km.

Most Recommended Round Trip:

  • From the ‘East’ ~ Patensie/Humansdorp(R331/R332) – Komdomo – Cambria – Rooihoek – Geelhoutbos – Sandvlakte – Studtis – Nuwekloof – Uniondale – Avontuur (R62 Langkloof) – Haarlem – Misgund – Joubertina – Kareedouw – Humansdorp.
  • From the ‘West’ ~ Uniondale(Hartebeesriver road) – Nuwekloof – Studtis – Sandvlakte – Geelhoutbos – Rooihoek – Cambria – Komdomo – Humansdorp/Patensie – Kareedouw (R62 Langkloof) – Joubertina – Misgund – Haarlem – Avontuur – Uniondale.

Traveling Time: The traveling time however, is 6 to 8 hours. It is advisable to make enquiries beforehand regarding road conditions as well as suitable vehicle type. Presently the stretch of road between Cambria and Geelhoutbos can only be accessed with a 4x4 or other "High-rider" type of vehicle.

Accommodation: The Baviaanskloof is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. To avoid disappointment and consequent inconvenience, plan your visit and make your bookings well in advance.

Shopping/Refueling: There is no shopping facilities or refuel points in the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. Whether you are entering the reserve from the Western or Eastern side, do your shopping and refuelling before entering the reserve.

It is a unique, must-see and feel experience: a landscape of unimaginable contrasts where deep valleys are offset against towering peaks, lush riverine forests and vivid snow-white beaches alongside clear, bronze waters and is populated by a wide selection of animals-from leopard and buffalo, through various antelope species, to the ever present baboons and tortoises. This area hosts seven of South Africa’s eight biomes and is truly a place of outstanding natural beauty and biodiversity. ”Nature untouched”
